Holli Castillo Spices Things Up With "Gumbo Justice"

Nights in New Orleans can be as dangerous as they are steamy, especially for a smart-mouthed, competitive Assistant District Attorney like Ryan Murphy. If the criminals she prosecutes aren't trouble enough, she has an overprotective police captain for a daddy and four cop brothers to contend with, as well as a possible romance with a hot detective-- or two. And then there's the small problem of a psychotic serial killer, who may or may not be trying to help her on her way to the top.

Review:

"Holli Castillo has the pulse on law enforcement beyond the headlines in pre-Katrina New Orleans. Her background as a public defender lends her debut novel authenticity and a strong voice to prosecutor Ryan Murphy. Part police procedural, part legal drama, Castillo is a welcome addition to both genres."- Sunny Frazier, author of WHERE ANGELS FEAR and others in the Christy Bristol Mystery Series.

  1. Hi, Holli, and welcome to Bookland Heights!

One of the reviews mentions your background offers authenticity to "Gumbo Justice."

Where there difficulties blending the real with fiction?

  2. Welcome to BH, Holli! What an intriguing title! I lived in N.O for a year, so I can't wait to read it.

  3. Diana, the biggest difficulty was making sure I changed events in the book that may have been inspired by real life events enough to make them fiction. A lot of real life events planted seeds of story ideas in my mind, but I purposely changed them enough so they couldn't be construed as true. In real life, the events were not nearly as exciting anyway, but did spark my imagination in some way. I also made sure I created original characters and did not base any of them on anyone from real life, although I think some of my former coworkers would have liked a mention! The only thing that is one hundred percent factual are most of the settings.

  4. Mary, thanks for the welcome. I hope you find the New Orleans settings familiar when you read the book, although not too familiar- I doubt you hung out in the housing developments or at murder scenes when you lived here! Holli.

  5. GUMBO JUSTICE is just the right title for this book, and Ryan is a sassy and spirited protagonist. A smart, ambitious woman who is also quite a hottie herself, Ryan takes the reader on a wild ride through steamy, exotic New Orleans.

Warning...don't start this one too close to bedtime, especially if you need your full eight! And don't sass the author about her accent..she doesn't have one...y'all.
