What an adventure each weekend brought to my life. I sat with a small bag of popcorn and watched the western stars ride across the screen. John Wayne captured my attention with many of his film. Then I began reading Louis L’Amour, Dana Ross Fuller, Zane Grey, and other western writers. Now I enjoy the challenge of bringing back the old west in my writings. A journey of where we came from.<br /><br />BH: What is the one thing you want readers to know about your book(s) and/or writing?<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">GR:</span></strong>As a researcher at the Library of Congress, my books are fiction based on fact. I wrote my novels as fiction to entertain, but wanted to bring out the history of our wonderful country and what it truly was like back when people struggled to settle our land, being it pioneer, slaves, or Indians. The challenges they faced, the struggles they endured, and the disasters that befell them are what we must remember, it's who we are.<br /><br />BH: What is your next project and when can we expect to read it?<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">GR:</span></strong> My latest book, <em>Winds of Change</em>, was released in April 2009, the second in the series about the Anderson family. The storyline is about Sarah Anderson, her life as a wife to an Arapaho Indian and the mother to his child.<br /><br />My next project, <em>Bound for Texas</em>, is a work in progress and should be out in 2010. The story is the life and challenges of James Anderson who, as a young boy, is rescued from a river bank, hauled to Texas by two drifters and becomes a rancher, all the while searching for his family who journeyed west to California in <em>Journey to Tracer's Point</em>.<br /></div><br /><div>***************************<br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><span style="color:#333333;">Brought to you in part by:</span> </span><br /></em>BUY: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/WOOF-Women-Only-Over-Fifty/dp/1590806069/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219407881&sr=1-1" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>WOOF: Women Only Over Fifty</strong></span></a><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong> ,</strong> <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span><strong> </strong></span><a href="http://www.wendelwordsworth.com/" target="new"><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wendel </span><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wordsworth</span></strong></a><span style="color:#ff0000;">, <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span> </span><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"><strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=18&y=17" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Cynthia's Attic</span></a></strong><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;"> </span></strong><br /><br /><br /></div></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 302px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 94px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324877288291030914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE1IsL43ncsEZ2otqjLOhv0QgZYKq4WejtYBOig9oTvdnI-y_FM9pksjIpt2Hc8XTMLoJBZFOAuAoXEmoSJB39jsK8H9whBqLAPlUigHzUmK7DWnbareMp7WwMzkzZDUUEbeU8FcVx2GMD/s400/bh.jpg" /></span></strong><br /><br /><div></div>Diana Blackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06177915857090560626noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290279359632060588.post-9206613422730736122009-11-23T03:45:00.010-05:002009-11-23T03:45:00.440-05:00"Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers" by Brigitte A. Thompson, author of eight financial books including the just released <em>Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers</em> published by Crystal Press:</strong><br /><em>Tell us what Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers is about. </em>Writers have many important questions to ask about income and expenses, but no single source for answers. I created this book, Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers, to be that source. It is an easy-to-understand guide to organizing a writer’s financial life.<br /><br />This book addresses issues writers face daily such as how to deduct travel expenses, determine taxable writing income, and claim home office deductions. Navigating through the recordkeeping required for a small business owner can be difficult. This book is written exclusively for those of us who earn money by writing. </div><div></div><div></div><div>Readers will also find that each part of this book works together to assist in forming an overall business plan. The chapters take the writer through a comprehensive process that works as a building block towards a successful writing business.<br /><br /><em>Have you found that freelance writers require a different set of bookkeeping rules?</em>Many bookkeeping rules are universal such as the requirement to record income, but there are some areas of the tax law that are of more interest to freelance writers. This includes dealing with royalty payments, bartering, personal property and agent fees. My book addresses the universal tax rules as well as the infrequently discussed rules that apply specifically to freelance writers.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Learning how to document expenses and how to track income will give writers the best chance at overall business success.<br /><br /><em>What are some tax deductions that freelance writers might not be aware of?</em> There are many tax deductions available to writers. Some expenses are common, such as the cost of purchasing a case of paper or paying for a computer software upgrade. Other costs incurred in the operation of your writing business may not jump out at you as expenses when they could be. For example, consider the following accounts.</div><div></div><div></div><div><em>Mileage</em>: Trips made in your vehicle to pick up office supplies can be counted as a business deduction if you record the proper information to support it. </div><div><br /><em>Meals:</em> Treating your agent to a restaurant meal with the discussion focusing on your next book can also generate a tax deduction when properly documented. </div><div><br /><em>Shipping:</em> UPS charges and postage used to mail a query or review copy of your book can be a small expense, but it should still be tracked. Those small deductions add up and every penny spent as a qualified business expense will reduce the amount of income tax you owe.</div><div></div><div><em></em></div><div><em>Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers</em> devotes an entire chapter to expenses including a comprehensive listing of expenses and detailed information regarding what documentation is required to support each one.<br /><br /><em>I'm sure you've observed other freelance writers making accounting missteps that cost them time and money. What are some of the most common issues and how can we avoid them?<br /></em>The most common misstep I’ve seen with writers is not taking themselves seriously as business owners. This can lead to financial pitfalls. Many writers have been honing their craft for years so it’s hard to identify an official starting date for their self-employment. Without this point to mark the beginning, it is easy to put off tracking income and expenses. This can be an unfortunate mistake. </div><div><br />The IRS will consider you to be in business when you are actively pursuing projects intended to generate income and expenses. This means they will expect you to file a tax return to report those transactions. Keeping track of your income and expenses from day one will enable you to pay the least amount of income taxes on the money you earn. </div><div><br /><em>Many people find numbers, especially when related to bookkeeping and taxes, intimidating. Will this book make these things easier to understand"? </em>Yes, my book breaks down complicated number crunching into easy to follow steps. By reading the book, readers will understand why it's important to keep certain receipts and how those pieces of paper factor into the overall success of their writing business. Sometimes knowing the reasoning behind a task makes it easier to complete. </div><div><br />Writers can take advantage of some wonderful tax deductions, but only when they are aware of the possibility and know how to accurately document the expenses. My book explains it all in a reader friendly format.</div><div><br /><em>What are some of the challenges readers face with regards to bookkeeping?</em>I found the most common challenge writers face revolves around what they can claim as income and what counts as a tax deduction. For example, if their first job is writing the school newsletter, is the money received really income? Do they need to do something with the Internal Revenue Service before they can be considered a business? How do they handle self- employment tax?<br /></div><div></div><div>The second most common concern for the freelance writers is related to proper documentation. What receipts did they need to save? How should they be kept? What information needs to be recorded to prove the expense? These are all great questions and they are addressed in the book. </div><div><br /><em>Why is it important for writers to understand bookkeeping?</em></div><div>Writers are earning money and this money needs to be reported as income on their income tax return. If writers do not have any expenses to claim, their taxable income will be higher and they will owe more income tax. </div><div></div><div></div><div>Understanding what can be claimed as business expenses when you are a writer and how to properly document these expenses will help ensure the success of your business. </div><div><br />The most important thing you can do as a writer is to become organized. There are many books available on how to organize your writing, but this is the best book available about how to organize the financial side of your writing business.<br /><br /><em>Obviously, your book is a great place for writers to get information on bookkeeping. Are there are any other resources you recommend?</em> Yes, I recommend writers visit the IRS web site (www.irs.gov) to research specific tax issues and the Small Business Administration (www.sbaonline.sba.gov) for general business information. </div><div></div><div></div><div>I also recommend joining professional associations for writers such as American Society of Journalists and Authors (www.asja.org), The Authors Guild (www.authorsguild.org) and National Writers Union (www.nwu.org). There are many groups to choose from so consider the benefits of membership before joining. </div><div></div><div></div><div>I was interviewed recently by Freelance Success (http://www.FreelanceSuccess.com) which offers an insightful newsletter for their members. There are also online groups for writers such as MomWriters (http://www.MomWriters.com) offering networking opportunities as well as camaraderie. </div><div></div><div></div><div>***************************<br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><span style="color:#333333;">Brought to you in part by:</span> </span><br /></em>BUY: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/WOOF-Women-Only-Over-Fifty/dp/1590806069/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219407881&sr=1-1" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>WOOF: Women Only Over Fifty</strong></span></a><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong> ,</strong> <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span><strong> </strong></span><a href="http://www.wendelwordsworth.com/" target="new"><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wendel </span><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wordsworth</span></strong></a><span style="color:#ff0000;">, <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span> </span><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="><strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=18&y=17" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Cynthia's Attic</span></a></strong><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;"> </span></strong><br /><br /><br /></div></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 302px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 94px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324877288291030914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE1IsL43ncsEZ2otqjLOhv0QgZYKq4WejtYBOig9oTvdnI-y_FM9pksjIpt2Hc8XTMLoJBZFOAuAoXEmoSJB39jsK8H9whBqLAPlUigHzUmK7DWnbareMp7WwMzkzZDUUEbeU8FcVx2GMD/s400/bh.jpg" /></span></strong> </div>Diana Blackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06177915857090560626noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290279359632060588.post-84882924902241739102009-11-16T01:51:00.007-05:002009-11-16T01:51:00.380-05:00"Look to the East" with Maureen Lang in Bookland Heights<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlhwsrQbtBf44JLpOd9kwK8Eb1rjQf118h6nQF5ppEXo1JAFd8Cijim57R13wwnURBzqe-AAvsnKv-lLhO63BnfusNy8jafKK-jQcvAVEZznbDxwVh0dmhdJtznFvYSvaZxL3cKbvBtDi9/s1600-h/maureen+cover2.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 362px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397761836998068418" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlhwsrQbtBf44JLpOd9kwK8Eb1rjQf118h6nQF5ppEXo1JAFd8Cijim57R13wwnURBzqe-AAvsnKv-lLhO63BnfusNy8jafKK-jQcvAVEZznbDxwVh0dmhdJtznFvYSvaZxL3cKbvBtDi9/s400/maureen+cover2.jpg" /></a> <strong><em><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;">Look to the East:</span></em></strong><br /><div><div>At the dawn of the First World War, the French village of Briecourt is isolated from the battles, but the century-old feud between the Toussaints and the de Colvilles still rages in the streets. When the German army sweeps in to occupy the town, families on both sides of the feud are forced to work together to protect stragglers caught behind enemy lines.<br /><br />Julitte Toussaint may have been adopted from a faraway island, but she feels the scorn of the de Colvilles as much as anyone born a Toussaint. So when she falls in love with one of the stragglers—a wealthy and handsome Belgian entrepreneur—she knows she’s playing with fire. Charles Lassone hides in the cellar of the Briecourt church, safe from the Germans for the moment. But if he’s discovered, it will bring danger to the entire village and could cost Charles his life.<br />***************************<br /><em><strong>Review:</strong></em> "This is an intriguing historical tale with a romantic subplot enhancing the deep look at life during an occupation. Julitte is terrific as the lead protagonist who holds the insightful story line together as her love with Charles is pure and in stark contrast to a village filled with the seven deadly sins. Readers will enjoy this cautionary tale that resonates today at a time when outright lies by leaders are acceptable because the mean no longer matters if the end is achieved." --<br /><strong><em>Harriet Klausner</em></strong><br />***************************<br /><a href="http://www.maureenlang.com/" target="new"><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Website </span></strong></a><br /><a href="http://maureenlang.blogspot.com/"><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Blog</span></strong></a><br /><a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/home.php?ref=home" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>Facebook</strong></span></a><br /><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Look-East-Great-Maureen-Lang/review/product/1414324359/ref=ntt_at_ep_cm_img" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>BUY on Amazon</strong></span></a><br /><a href="http://www.tyndale.com/products/fiction/details.asp?isbn=978-1-4143-2435-7&subpage" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>BUY from Tyndale</strong></span></a><br /><strong><span style="color:#333333;">***************************<br /></span></strong><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdIglamrS8pAsy9ZUWwtr_4E22-ypqNBfXxhyLentFY7O2DR7d_2L_617dgIEtoYFbFy_En-zD-ZfEy_4m6ViOJxkkXtETkpFhma04MJerJkz3ue3UaqlIMc511HuN4fJWxlxcN1Tz4OWt/s1600-h/maureen.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 214px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397761569026783970" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdIglamrS8pAsy9ZUWwtr_4E22-ypqNBfXxhyLentFY7O2DR7d_2L_617dgIEtoYFbFy_En-zD-ZfEy_4m6ViOJxkkXtETkpFhma04MJerJkz3ue3UaqlIMc511HuN4fJWxlxcN1Tz4OWt/s320/maureen.jpg" /></a> A chat with the author, <strong><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;">Maureen Lang:</span></strong></div><div><br />BH: What or who most influenced your writing?<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>ML:</strong></span>I’ve been writing since I was ten so I’ve had many influences over the years. This novel bravely explores the difference between a relationship that bends and one that breaks; it even suggests that a healed fracture is stronger than what was originally whole.” -<strong>Peter Rock</strong>, author of <em>My Abandonment, The Bewildered, and The Unsettling </em></div><br /><div><em></em></div><em></em></div><div><div>Disabilities and marriage make things hard for both parties involved. "Coyote Heart: A Graceful Story of Love and Redemption" tells the story of Carolyn Weedman as she copes with a disabled husband and a failing marriage. When love begins to bloom elsewhere, she is faced with harsh decisions that will change her life forever. Poignant and intriguing reading with strong romance elements, "Coyote Heart" is a solid and top pick for general fiction readers. -- <strong>Midwest Book Review<br /></strong><br /><strong>*******************************************</strong><br /><strong>Paula, what or who most influenced your writing?<br /></strong>I’ve always been a huge fan of the Southern gothic – William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor are my all-time favorite writers. As a graduate student in English Literature, I studied Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Bellow, Doctorow, Didion, Heller, and Pynchon. Other authors whose stories have haunted me, stunned me, or made me weep: Sherman Alexie, Ha Jin, Barbara Kingsolver, Louise Erdrich, Jane Smiley, Jane Hamilton, Anna Quindlen, and Elizabeth Berg.<br /><br /><strong>What is the one thing you want readers to know about your book(s) and/or writing? <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTBEsCfEPALuuv3NcOT1s0O4ywYCrqz3BrA_vNgNt0qvdUwMZLiPRH4XNabrH_JdeyTRjOJiKTyrmmJ7fIFtpxumcbWWk1SJrgJoOCeGUmUO-Lpq8dSRYOB83rdbeVFbA5rhQVZapWx7NP/s1600-h/paula2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 145px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371754648077591186" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTBEsCfEPALuuv3NcOT1s0O4ywYCrqz3BrA_vNgNt0qvdUwMZLiPRH4XNabrH_JdeyTRjOJiKTyrmmJ7fIFtpxumcbWWk1SJrgJoOCeGUmUO-Lpq8dSRYOB83rdbeVFbA5rhQVZapWx7NP/s320/paula2.jpg" /></a><br /></strong>I wrote this novel, in part, because I’ve always been fascinated by what makes a marriage work. My sense is that many marriages survive not because the two individuals involved are meant for each other, but because the losses and hardships that they’ve endured forge a bond that is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to sever. I also believe that oftentimes one has to leave a marriage – sometimes through adultery or separation – in order to find it again. Carolyn Weedman has married young and given up her career while in her twenties. She loses a child, suffers through her husband’s affair with a friend’s wife, and then has to live with his disability after an auto accident. When Coyote Heart begins, she’s ripe for a detour in her life and an incident where she accidentally hits a dog and meets Roy Washburn presents her with that option. Although she doesn’t seek the affair, when the opportunity arises, she lets it happen and, ultimately (ironically), saves her marriage.<br /><br /><strong>What is your next project and when can we expect to read it?</strong><br />I am working on an historical novel called <em>Favorite Daughter</em>, which is about Pocahontas, who tells the story in first person, in her own point of view. I recently read Sena Jeter Naslund’s novel, Abundance, which tells the story of Marie Antoinette in her own voice and was fascinated by the way it dispelled so many myths about her character, while showing us who she really was as a person. I’m trying to do the same thing in <em>Favorite Daughter</em>, by telling the story from Pocahontas’s perspective and letting her show us the true nature of her relationship with John Smith and how she came to play such a significant role in American history.<br /><br />***************************************<br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><span style="color:#333333;"></span></span></em><br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><span style="color:#333333;">Brought to you in part by:</span> </span><br /></em>BUY: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/WOOF-Women-Only-Over-Fifty/dp/1590806069/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219407881&sr=1-1" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>WOOF: Women Only Over Fifty</strong></span></a><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong> ,</strong> <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span><strong> </strong></span><a href="http://www.wendelwordsworth.com/" target="new"><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wendel </span><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wordsworth</span></strong></a><span style="color:#ff0000;">, <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span> </span><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="><strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=18&y=17" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Cynthia's Attic</span></a></strong><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;"> </span></strong><br /><br /><br /><br /></div></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span y="17" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" target="new" keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x="></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 302px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 94px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324877288291030914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE1IsL43ncsEZ2otqjLOhv0QgZYKq4WejtYBOig9oTvdnI-y_FM9pksjIpt2Hc8XTMLoJBZFOAuAoXEmoSJB39jsK8H9whBqLAPlUigHzUmK7DWnbareMp7WwMzkzZDUUEbeU8FcVx2GMD/s400/bh.jpg" /></span></strong> </div>Diana Blackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06177915857090560626noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290279359632060588.post-64988133279354821242009-10-05T00:05:00.000-04:002009-10-05T07:59:35.260-04:00L. His family is proud of his academic and athletic achievements at Georgia Tech, and despite the temptations of college life, he has maintained his moral standards.<br /><br />Yet beneath the peaceful surface, Mike is consumed with guilt, fearing condemnation and rejection. The plot takes us across the U.S., to the bush country of Canada, and to a cold case murder scene in Germany as this multi-cultural family deals with diversity and racism. The novel is populated with unforgettable characters in a sometimes shocking and always unflinchingly honest exploration of the past. “Irretrievably Broken” was chosen as one of the<strong> top 20 novels by the online magazine, “Cold Coffee.”</strong><br /><br /><br /><strong><em><span style="color:#ff0000;">AUTHOR IRMA FRITZ</span></em></strong> was born in Ukraine of German ancestry. By the time she immigrated to the U.S., she had already lived in five countries: Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Austria, and Germany. Ms. Fritz developed a passion for writing at an early age. As a child, growing up in post-WWII Germany, she wrote poetry and short stories, and immersed herself in reading the classics. Upon moving to the U. S., she earned a B.A. in English from Cal State L.A. After graduation, she spent some years working as press agent at various Hollywood PR companies. After moving to Washington State, she worked in banking administration and human resources.</p><p>Ms. Fritz continued to hone her writing skills at the University of Washington as well as other writers’ workshops. “Irretrievably Broken” is her debut novel. The work was ultimately inspired by a newspaper clipping from her hometown in Germany. A neighboring property had been torn down and a mikvah, a Jewish ritual bath, was unearthed. All the elements I love; the California coast, the ocean, lighthouses, romance and mystery. What more is there?<br /><br /><strong>Anne Carter's <em>Point Surrender</em></strong> has it all. Amy Winslow has reached, just about, the lowest point in her life and is running from seemingly insurmountable problems. Enter, Case McKenna. Just his name gets the blood boiling! They share the strange sighting of a mystery man falling from a bluff near the lighthouse, along with a desire to bury unhappy events in their lives.<br /><br />While trying to escape her own demons and uncover clues about the death of a former lighthouse keeper, Amy unwittingly reveals aspects of Case's life that he had long suppressed. Will this drive them apart? Or bring them closer?<br /><br />You can find the answer in this beautifully written story by author, <strong><em>Anne Carter</em></strong>. Does he mean more to her than she thought? Will he let her go without a fight?<br /><br />Did I mention she has an elevator phobia? The bad guy knows that, too.<br /><br />Sometimes it’s not easy to be a writer, but most of us know that already.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9VjgTEfJTQItRyQtGY_4nhE2LJ6gB5_XHf6rpEx5xj7xhfrhDyUVD4NdtcD_5dkJYX545P0gEDfP2Dkvtzi75RSYyaR4ZFoID-3oq2tX6Jo7ncN_WwW9GeWYqscdivkjjIoo9maAfiow/s1600-h/Morgan+Mandel.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 186px; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369483939739057634" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9VjgTEfJTQItRyQtGY_4nhE2LJ6gB5_XHf6rpEx5xj7xhfrhDyUVD4NdtcD_5dkJYX545P0gEDfP2Dkvtzi75RSYyaR4ZFoID-3oq2tX6Jo7ncN_WwW9GeWYqscdivkjjIoo9maAfiow/s320/Morgan+Mandel.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><strong>BH:</strong> Welcome to Bookland Heights, Morgan. Then, it kept me entertained so thoroughly that I was saddened to realize the adventure was nearing an end. Although the story feels a bit “rambling” in spots, the story is overall wonderfully written, engaging and through-and-through humorous. Those between men and women, families and their opinions on marriage and the opposite sex.<br /><br />"A SENSIBLE MATCH is a sensible choice for summertime reading. It is entertaining and lively, romantic and funny. I loved watching the relationship between Abby and Edwin evolve. Without giving too much away, I’ll just say it was great fun to watch them change so drastically. They are not the same characters at the end of this novel that they were in the opening pages, and it was entertaining to watch the transformation." <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjvhHvFQEAg0OxIQZcOtjMmHaGadx4DAcuIkA6c8PLF1AaZ-0vVC98_C4ASdqX2ruT6H-Svx_YMTWMfNhjJzAPno9mv6_ytY-xzObK3u24wvpL1b2PT6uY15kirFe4AIjdEgUKii7muZD0/s1600-h/TCpic.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 125px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 195px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360937879162871794" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjvhHvFQEAg0OxIQZcOtjMmHaGadx4DAcuIkA6c8PLF1AaZ-0vVC98_C4ASdqX2ruT6H-Svx_YMTWMfNhjJzAPno9mv6_ytY-xzObK3u24wvpL1b2PT6uY15kirFe4AIjdEgUKii7muZD0/s200/TCpic.jpg" /></a><br /></span></em><br /></span><br /><strong><a href="http://www.terylcartwright.com/" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Website</span></a></strong><br /><br /><strong><a href="http://blogs.myspace.com/271246421" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">MySpace</span></a></strong><br /><br /><strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sensible-Match-Teryl-Cartwright/dp/097933277X/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_1" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Buy Amazon</span></a></strong><br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Buy </span><a href="http://search.barnesandnoble.com/A-Sensible-Match/Teryl-Cartwright/e/9780979332777/?itm=5" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Barnes & Noble</span></a></strong><br /><br /><strong><a href="http://www.vrpublishing.com/" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Buy from Publisher</span></a></strong><br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;color:#000000;"><strong><em>An excerpt -</em> A Sensible Match</strong><em><strong>:</strong> </em></span></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;color:#000000;"><em><br />“Well?” Constance tapped her toe impatiently, awaiting Abby’s response.</em></span></div><span style="font-size:85%;color:#000000;"><em><div><br />“I am sure I must see him soon enough. This is an enjoyable story that will make you laugh, cry, and be glad you read it." –<em><strong>Romantic Times Magazine</strong></em><br /><br />"A beautiful, moving story. Alexis Hart has the amazing ability to generate characters that literally step off the page in three-dimensional form. The dialogue is well developed and the entire story is a hauntingly accurate tale concerning a serious issue. In the words of one reviewer, the collection offers “village wisdom for the 21st century.”<br /><br />Poetry, memoir, short stories—all are genres she has embraced. Further exploration of new arenas led to the publication of an audiobook <strong>“Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Song,” </strong>a companion piece of music from her father’s parlor and his jokes and stories anchor the original poems in their time and place.<br /><br /><strong>B.H.</strong> Welcome to Bookland Heights, Janet! As a fabulously creative, over-fifty woman, have you discovered any special challenges in the release of <strong><em>Sightlines</em></strong>?<br /><br /><strong>J.R.</strong> No. In fact, I'm sure my experience made it easier--including my skill and love in collaborating which I discuss in my <strong>WOOF</strong> guest post.<br /><br />My poetry book <strong>"Sightlines: A Poet's Diary"</strong> came out in 2006 when I turned 58. Our audio book <strong>"Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Music"</strong> came out and went into full launch in 2008/2009 the year I turned 60. If anything, age gives us greater wisdom and effectiveness. I found my age in no way a handicap.<br /><br /><strong>B.H.</strong> How is your father treating all this fame?<br /><br /><strong>J. R.</strong> He loves it! At 93, he has a file collecting all the praise we've received from the advance copies we sent out. It felt good to partner with him fully on this project. To have his voice, stories, and music preserved on the audio book is a gift to him and our family, of course. I travel with it just to hear his voice at night. In addition, people who've never met my father say his character comes right through in that gravelly voice filled with patriarchal authority and humor.<br /><br /><strong>B. H.</strong> What other projects are in the pipeline?<br /><br /><strong>J. R.</strong> Pop's family and friends poetry anthology "Worth Remembering" is at the printers now. We'll have it in our hands by August I'd guess. Then, back to working on my memoir "Finding My African Heart, a Village of Stories."<br /><br /><em>"Each moment is filled with warmth, humor, and a deep connection to those who have come before us. Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Music" is a must-have audio book for anyone who appreciates a good love story with the perfect musical accompaniment!"</em><br /><br /><div><em>--Sarah Moore, Writers in the Sky</em></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sightlines-Poets-Janet-Grace-Riehl/dp/0595374999/ref=sr_1_1/103-3124290-3885459?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198229667&sr=8-1"><span style="color:#cc0000;"><strong>Buy</strong></span></a><strong> Sightlines: A Poet's Diary<br /></strong><a href="http://cdbaby.com/cd/janetgraceriehl"><span style="color:#cc0000;"><strong>Buy</strong></span></a><strong> Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry & Music</strong><br /><br />Read more about <strong>Janet Grace Rielh</strong> on <strong>WOOF:</strong> <strong><em><a href="http://woofersclub.blogspot.com/2009/07/janet-grace-riehl-and-woofer-power.html"><span style="color:#ff0000;">"Achieving your dreams after fifty through collaboration"</span></a></em></strong></div><br /><br /><div><em><span style="color:#ff0000;"><span style="color:#333333;">Brought to you in part by:</span> </span><br /></em><span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/WOOF-Women-Only-Over-Fifty/dp/1590806069/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219407881&sr=1-1" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>WOOF: Women Only Over Fifty</strong></span></a><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong> ,</strong> <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span><strong> </strong></span><a href="http://www.wendelwordsworth.com/" target="new"><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wendel </span><span style="color:#ff0000;">Wordsworth</span></strong></a><span style="color:#ff0000;">, <span style="color:#000000;">BUY:</span> </span><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"><strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=18&y=17" target="new"><span style="color:#ff0000;">Cynthia's Attic</span></a></strong><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;"> </span></strong><br /></div></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span keywords="mary+cunningham+Cynthia%27s+Attic&x=" target="new" ref="'nb_ss_b/103-7177880-8331022?url=" y="17"></span></strong><strong><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 302px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 94px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324877288291030914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE1IsL43ncsEZ2otqjLOhv0QgZYKq4WejtYBOig9oTvdnI-y_FM9pksjIpt2Hc8XTMLoJBZFOAuAoXEmoSJB39jsK8H9whBqLAPlUigHzUmK7DWnbareMp7WwMzkzZDUUEbeU8FcVx2GMD/s400/bh.jpg" /></span></strong>Mary Cunninghamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04377529303481858837noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290279359632060588.post-58790885608650454162009-07-13T01:16:00.004-04:002009-07-13T10:14:14.883-04:00Matthew Simon and "The Chosen Few"<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg49JvMSNCyBjiu38Ptpr9mHs8Xf2FhtMzcPbGYKFCWQwWx3wJfEzj0co8DrsPNxezPNmvI8wc1_YrJ12PP3Ke4iPiJPVy3PCoya902SMdnkYFbxAsjPJQLABbsQwDzgg1LsKRvWX-Ti0gW/s1600-h/matthew1.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 263px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350670596152716946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg49JvMSNCyBjiu38Ptpr9mHs8Xf2FhtMzcPbGYKFCWQwWx3wJfEzj0co8DrsPNxezPNmvI8wc1_YrJ12PP3Ke4iPiJPVy3PCoya902SMdnkYFbxAsjPJQLABbsQwDzgg1LsKRvWX-Ti0gW/s400/matthew1.jpg" /></a> <div></div><div><span style="color:#000000;"><strong><em><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;">The Chosen Few</span></em></strong> In an investigation that takes him through the Boston neighborhoods of Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the South End, and downtown, private investigator Max Lovely finds himself entangled in an expanding web of men and women with big dreams and dark secrets. When he's forced to become an amateur sleuth, he meets Becca, the witness to the fatal crash, and she's wearing a wedding band as defense against men. Yet they're attracted to one another. He digs into his friend's murder, uncovers a major corporate scam, and falls for Becca--allowing him to say goodbye to his late wife. But when the killer comes for him and takes her, he may have to say goodbye again.</span><br /><em><span style="color:#000000;"></span></em><br /><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="color:#ff0000;"><em><strong>PERFECT COVER</strong></em>:</span>Gary and Becca are married, and women are being attacked in the hospital where she serves as a nurse. Gary is asked to look into it: In exchange, Becca is taken off the night shift. When she finds out, and he won't let her become involved in his sleuthing, she volunteers as a police decoy to catch a killer. They can't know two murderous plots are afoot. Gary aborts one, and for revenge the killer targets Becca from a direction that blind-sides the couple.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN3kIk8ia2LD8uVIO3hyYVMHSW1CMukxDrcmuJzy1RtvSdsrap222rhAYNsf2MGpxAxeqegvaf9EFa_Nhv3oBKwo1x7iJT4hukfGpmDoap9OaUqmpKD7F4yYy66FFF0WYrjroW02zbWpgc/s1600-h/randpic3.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 235px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 304px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350259911143980418" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN3kIk8ia2LD8uVIO3hyYVMHSW1CMukxDrcmuJzy1RtvSdsrap222rhAYNsf2MGpxAxeqegvaf9EFa_Nhv3oBKwo1x7iJT4hukfGpmDoap9OaUqmpKD7F4yYy66FFF0WYrjroW02zbWpgc/s400/randpic3.jpg" /></a><br /><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>About the books:</strong> <em>SAY GOODBYE</em> was published in 2/08 just after the author turned 70 years old. The second, <em>PERFECT COVER</em>, was published in 12/08, and the third, <em>HIGHER CALLING</em>, is due out in hard cover in July. Awards include: Deadly Ink Press' Best Unpublished Manuscript award and <em>SAY GOODBYE</em> went on to Final in the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. <em>PERFECT COVER</em> has been named a 2009 Finalist in that international contest, and in March '09 a submission of <em>DARK SEA</em> was named a winner in Mystery Writers of America/New York Chapter's 2008-2009 Mentor Contest. The Reluctant Sleuth Mystery Series is about a married couple who are amateur sleuths.
